Sharp drop in new cars on country’s roads in December

The number of new cars circulating on Greece’s roads fell at an annual rate of 25.2 percent in December as the global crisis and credit crunch bites deeper into the economy, according to data made public yesterday. The National Statistics Service said 8,702 new cars were registered in the last month of the year versus 11,627 cars in December 2007, which had seen a 17.8 percent drop from December 2006. Over the entire year, the number of new car sales fell almost 7 percent to 295,853 as opposed to a 4.3 percent annual rise in 2007. The largest slice of the pie was taken by Toyota in 2008, with 10.2 percent of the market, after selling 27,238 cars.
