Theme park considered for Cyprus

A worker is seen putting the final touches to a newly constructed theme park in this file photo. Cyprus could be in for a new theme park of its own, according to Cypriot Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis. Several Russian entrepreneurs are keen to develop a very large theme park in the town of Pyla and Cyprus has given them information and initial estimates on the cost of such a project, said the minister, according to a Bloomberg report. ‘We are still at a very early stage and we mustn’t build up big hopes,’ Stavrakis said. Tourism made a direct contribution of slightly less than 10 percent to Cypriot gross domestic product in 2008, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. That figure rises to more than 21 percent on an indirect basis, according to WTTC data.
