State subsidy for renewal of appliances

The Greek government is considering using European Union funds in order to subsidize the renewal of home electrical appliances, such as washing machines, in favor of more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly versions. After his meeting with Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis yesterday at the ministry, the head of the Hellenic Retail Business Association (SELPE), Theodoros Vardas, stated that the subsidy may be up to 200-250 euros per electrical appliance, but definitely no more than 25 percent of its market cost. Hatzidakis added that the plan is still under examination and official announcements will be made shortly on the subject after further negotiations.
