Transport Ministry tightens belt

Transport and Communications Minister Evripidis Stylianidis yesterday announced extensive cuts in the ministry’s spending, after a meeting with senior ministry officials. He said that flexible expenditures will be reduced by 10 percent, as too will all spending by the public companies supervised by the ministry, including Olympic Airlines and public transport firms. Stylianidis stressed that the salaries of the heads and senior executives of the firms will also be cut to match the amount paid to the general secretaries of ministries, in line with a recent government decision. A committee is being formed to ensure implementation of these measures within the next month.
