Banks power stocks higher

Greek equities added 1.69 percent yesterday, in step with solid gains on major European bourses, as banks outperformed on improved sentiment in the sector worldwide. The Athens Exchange’s benchmark general index ended at a session high of 1,584.16 points. Banks jumped 3.56 percent on improved investor sentiment following further assurances over the health of the US banking sector. National Bank added 5.37 percent to 10.60 euros and Bank of Cyprus rose 7.69 percent to 1.96 euros. Betting firm OPAP, whose fourth-quarter earnings fell short of market expectations, moved ahead 2.66 percent to 19.56 euros. Turnover eased to 85.7 million euros from 99.2 million euros in the previous session.
