Investors eye profit figures

Greek stocks are likely to build on recent gains today after upbeat US economic data pulled global markets higher yesterday. The Athens Exchange’s benchmark general index added 0.28 percent on Tuesday, ending at 1,694.28 points. The Athens bourse was closed yesterday due to the Independence Day holiday. New orders for US-made durables rose in February for the first time in seven months and sales of new homes rebounded, government reports showed, suggesting that the economic downturn might be easing a little. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 2.21 percent mid-session yesterday. On the local news front, investors will be chewing on more profit figures as the earnings season winds up at the end of the month. Metals group Mytilineos is scheduled to announce 2008 profit figures today.
