Slight growth in a tense climate

The majority of stocks on the local bourse withstood early pressure to notched up gains yesterday after two days of heavy losses. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index moved up to 2,182.07 points yesterday, rising by 0.91 percent from Wednesday’s close. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index increased by 1.47 percent to end at 1,113.28 points. Investors appeared once again nervous and reserved, but the positive performance of blue chips took the index back up. The biggest growth among blue chips was for the stocks of ATEbank (up 8.05 percent), Bank of Cyprus (7.36 percent), Marfin Popular Bank (6.31 percent) and Hellenic Postbank (5 percent). Worst off were the blue chips of Hellenic Petroleum (down 3.44 percent) and Hellaktor (2.26 percent). Turnover reached 191.8 million euros.
