Millions of knockoffs seized in 2008

Greek authorities confiscated a total of 3.6 million counterfeit products in 2008, in keeping with the steady flow of the last few years, which ranges from 2.5 to 5 million imitation products per year, according to European Union data released yesterday. The exception to that was in 2006 when the number of products seized by authorities soared to 26 million. Greece’s share of the products confiscated in the EU stood at 2 percent last year, as the total figure across the bloc came to 180 million single items. Greece is also growing as a producer of imitation products as well, becoming the fourth-biggest supplier of fake big-brand shoes in the EU, with Turkey third, behind top producers Spain and Switzerland.
