Meeting with minister, yes, but no tanks

Hellenic Vehicle Industry (ELVO) employees staged a work stoppage yesterday at the firm’s plant in Thessaloniki, in protest over the decline in its output. They will have a meeting with the political leadership of the National Defense Ministry on Tuesday morning, seeking guarantees by the government that production will continue in the coming years. Originally workers had planned to march through Thessaloniki streets yesterday along with a tank, but this was averted through the intervention of Macedonia-Thrace Minister Stavros Kalafatis on Wednesday evening. ELVO is the biggest vehicle industry in Greece, majority-owned by the state but the Mytilineos group controls 43 percent of it as well as its management. It mostly produces buses and armored vehicles.
