Blue chips help sustain upturn

Stocks rose for the fifth session in a row yesterday, driven higher by the strong showing of blue chips, National Bank in particular, and buoyed by good sentiment internationally. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index climbed to 2,275.34 points yesterday, growing by 2.01 percent from Friday’s close. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index rose by 2.59 percent to end at 1,173.18 points. National Bank saw its stock enjoy total gains of 22.3 percent in the last five sessions, after yesterday’s rise of 4.73 percent. It was outperformed on the day by Motor Oil (up 6.16 percent), ATEbank (5.96 percent) and Marfin Popular Bank (5.77 percent). The only losers of the day were OTE telecom (down 2.34 percent) and Public Power Corp (0.13 percent). Turnover reached 186.4 million euros.
