Energy-saving program for older homes

About 20,000 to 30,000 older buildings could be set for an energy upgrade via the new measures announced yesterday by Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis (left). The ‘Saving at Home’ program concerns buildings whose permits were issued before July 1979 and will fund total work of 1 billion euros using some 400 million euros in state subsidies, and benefiting some 100,000 households, or 400,000 people, in Greece. Upon completion of the work, households will be able to reduce their energy consumption by 50 to 70 percent, depending on the package they choose. The measure will take effect as of November 1, although the ministry hopes to get it running from October 1.
