Banks make major gains

Stocks registered a big rise in yesterday’s bourse session, with banks leading the jump with high demand. Their sectoral index posted 4.23 percent growth for the day. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index increased to 2,353.09 points yesterday, growing by 3.38 percent over Wednesday’s close. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 3.75 percent to end up at 1,211.55 points. The outperforming blue chips were the stocks of EFG Eurobank (up 7.76 percent), Hellenic Postbank (6.11 percent), Titan cement (5.85 percent), Mytilineos (5.26 percent) and Alpha Bank (5.22 percent). All blue chips managed to record gains. Turnover came to 163.1 million euros, up from 103 million euros on Wednesday.
