US gains spur European stocks

Greek stocks added 0.84 percent yesterday as a strong open on Wall Street ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate announcement pulled European bourses higher. The Athens bourse’s benchmark general index closed at 2,295.65 points. Banks added 2.14 percent, with Alpha Bank rising 3.35 percent to 9.26 euros and ATEBank gaining 3.29 percent to 1.57 euros. Peer National firmed 1.33 percent to 19.86 euros. Coca-Cola Hellenic, which outperformed the market on Tuesday, slipped 1.58 percent to 15.60 euros. PPC also ended in the red, easing 0.27 percent to 14.66 euros. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index added 1.15 percent to 1,190.68 points. Turnover reached 132.1 million euros versus 164 million in the previous session.
