Athens bourse jumps 3.35 pct

Greek stocks surged more than 3 percent yesterday, in step with rising global equity markets, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke confirmed that the US economy is on the verge of recovery. The Athens bourse benchmark general index added 3.35 percent to 2,479.85 points, bringing gains for the week to 5.9 percent. Banks soared 6.14 percent. Piraeus Bank jumped 13.83 percent to 10.70 euros and Eurobank advanced 9.32 percent to 10.44 euros. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gained 4.17 percent to 1,313.12 points. OTE telecom moved ahead 1.62 percent to 10.64 euros and OPAP ended at 16.40 euros, up 1.61 percent. Turnover rose to 287.9 million euros from 188 million in the previous session.
