Index holds on to 2,600-pt level

Most stocks headed lower on the Greek bourse yesterday amid a general climate of correction across Europe, although the main index in Athens managed to stay above the 2,600-point level. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index suffered only marginal losses in a day that saw major fluctuations, as it shrank to 2,609.25 points yesterday, falling by just 0.09 percent from Wednesday’s close at 2,611.52 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 0.18 percent to end at 1,378.15 points. The biggest rise among blue chips was for Alpha Bank (up 2.31 percent) and PPC (1.80 percent), while ATEbank and National Bank suffered the highest losses (down 2.47 and 2.44 percent respectively). Losers outnumbered gainers by a three-to-two ratio. Turnover reached 260.3 million euros, down from Wednesday’s 343 million euros.
