Change in law on illegally converted parts of homes?

The Environment Ministry seems to be abandoning PASOK’s firm position opposing a recently passed law on so-called «imiypaithrioi,» or areas of homes that were originally planned as balconies but have since been turned into rooms. The newly formed ministry is now examining a fresh proposal on the issue that will be made public next week, despite Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou’s assurance last week that the regulation will be «frozen.» So far owners have filed applications for the settlement of no more than 0.4 percent of an estimated 1.5 million such spaces since July, according to the Federation of Construction Enterprises in Greece (OMKOEE).
