Eurostat officials meet up with finance minister

Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou (center) was scheduled to hold a meeting with Eurostat officials in Athens late yesterday, after the envoys from the EU’s statistics agency met with officials from the General Accounting Office. The consultations came ahead of the publication of the fall progress report by the European Commission next Thursday and will examine key macroeconomic figures and the execution of the state budget. The visit by the Brussels officials is intended to record the fiscal figures and the national account data according to EU methodology. The minister is expected to suggest that the data sent to Brussels by the previous government have now been revised and will show the country’s finances to be in an even worse state than previously feared.
