Stocks fall on banks pressure

Pressure on banks resulted in across-the-board losses yesterday forn Greek stocks, while turnover was markedly less than in previous sessions. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,318.64 points yesterday, declining by 2.73 percent from last Friday’s close at 2,383.62 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped 3.70 percent to end at 1,202.62 points. Mid-caps, however, had more moderate losses, with their index falling just 0.49 percent. There was a universal decline among banks, with EFG Eurobank losing 5.98 percent, ahead of National Bank (down 5.56 percent), Marfin Popular Bank (5.12 percent), Piraeus Bank (4.02 percent), Alpha Bank (3.33 percent), Bank of Cyprus (2.83 percent) and Hellenic Postbank (2.80 percent). Turnover amounted to just 171.6 million euros, from a daily average of 266 million euros last week.
