Change in shop hours is likely but not for now

The government is considering making changes to the opening hours of stores, including allowing their operation on some Sundays every year. The new institutional framework will likely be ready in the second half of next year, following consultation with the parties concerned. Economy Minister Louka Katseli spoke yesterday of possible changes to the opening hours system and even its complete liberalization, dubbing the existing framework as ‘restrictive, because it tells you what you cannot do, while, in other countries, it tells you what you can do.’ However, for the time being, there will be no changes to the opening hours of stores over the festive season, with shops opening on Sunday, December 20, as they do each year before Christmas.
