Better mood drives stocks up

Stocks on the local bourse posted a healthy rise yesterday, reversing the declining trend seen for most of the previous week, thanks to the favorable sentiment in international markets. In a day marked by ups and downs, the Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,216.94 points yesterday, rising by 2.60 percent from Friday’s close at 2,160.68 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew by 3.52 percent to end at 1,136.55 points. The driving force of the Greek bourse, namely National Bank stock, climbed back above the 18-euro level after rising yesterday by 5.73 percent. It was outperformed by Bank of Cyprus (up 7.11 percent) and Public Power Corporation (6.24 percent). There were losses for Intralot (down 1.62 percent), Mytilineos (0.59 percent) and Motor Oil (0.18 percent). Turnover amounted to 198.8 million euros.
