Consumption of beer follows dip in tourism

The beer market has witnessed a considerable decline over the past year, mostly due to the reduction in tourism traffic and the change in Greek consumption habits, according to an ICAP survey. Turnover on the local market dropped by about 6 to 8 percent last year compared with the year before. Greeks now tend to go out less and drink more beer at home, the survey has found, estimating a rise in the domestic consumption of beer to reach an annual level of 5 percent. Consumption of beer in Greece remains a seasonal phenomenon, as it mostly concerns the period from March to October and culminates in the May-to-September period, mainly due to tourism and warmer summer weather.
