Bank gains lead stock rebound
Greek stocks rebounded yesterday advancing nearly 5 percent on bank-led gains amid talk that the European Union will provide a bailout package to Greece. The Athens bourse’s benchmark general index rose 4.96 percent to 1,895.96 points, after touching on a session high of 1,905 points. Banks recovered from Monday’s slide of nearly 7 percent by adding 8.64 percent yesterday. National Bank jumped 9.30 percent to 14.10 euros and peer Alpha advanced 14.93 percent to 6.85 euros. Piraeus Bank also performed strongly, rising 11.62 percent to 5.86 euros. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index leapt 5.93 percent to 948.26 points. Turnover rose to 297.5 million versus 283 million in the previous session.
