Late buying helps trim losses

Late-session buying helped trim losses on the Athens bourse yesterday with equities falling 1.71 percent as a result of further pressures on bank stocks. The Athens bourse’s benchmark general index ended at 1,866.87 points after dipping to an intra-session low of 1,832 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index retreated 1.31 percent to 924.76 points. Banks gave up 1.35 percent with analysts citing weak GDP growth data and a widening of yield spreads. EFG Eurobank dipped 3.64 percent to 5.30 euros and peer Alpha lost 2.42 percent to 6.44 euros. Hellenic Exchanges, the operator of the Athens bourse, also underperformed, falling 4.22 percent to 6.36 euros. Turnover reached 163.8 million euros versus 202 million in the previous session.
