Search for oil, natural gas to start

The Greek government will commission searches for oil and natural gas in central and northern Greece in the next year, according to Deputy Environment, Energy and Climate Minister Yiannis Maniatis. «Based on strong indications that we have so far, there is enough evidence to convince us to quickly create a national body that will launch tenders aimed at drawing serious investors that can search for petrol in our country,» he said. Among the areas at the top of the search list are Ioannina, northwest Greece, and the broader area of the Gulf of Patra, north of the Peloponnese. Currently in Greece, oil and natural gas exploration is conducted off Kavala, in the northeastern part of the country. The country’s oil and resources are widely considered by industry experts to be underdeveloped.
