Alexis Mitropoulos (left), a candidate for deputy regional governor for Attica, shakes hands with voters yesterday. Candidates taking part in the November 7 local elections have been busy trying to get their message across to locals. With just a few weeks left before the polls, the Socialist government is believed to be putting the final touches to a 2.3-billion-euro package aimed at protecting jobs in the shrinking economy. Prime Minister George Papandreou is likely to make the announcements early next week.
