Main index up 1.24 percent on big bank gains

Bank stocks propelled the local bourse higher yesterday during a session that ended with gains for most listed companies. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,542.41 points, expanding 1.24 percent from Wednesday’s close at 1,523.51 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew by 1.28 percent to end at 738.62 points. Eurobank EFG led the blue chips with a 4.07 percent rise, ahead of Alpha Bank (up 3.45 percent) and Piraeus Bank (3.03 percent). Public Power Corporation fell 2.74 percent and OPAP gave up 2.52 percent. In total, 116 stocks moved up, 51 went down and 57 remained unchanged. Sfakianakis led the gainers with an 18.42 percent rise, while Images & Sound posted the biggest loss with a 20 percent decline. Turnover came to 91.3 million euros.
