3-billion-euro drop…

The National Confederation of Greek Commerce (ESEE) estimates that there will be a 3-billion-euro drop in turnover for stores this Christmas season compared to last year, according to its chief, Vassilis Korkidis. The ESEE chairman also called on consumers to ‘show some understanding’ by supporting their local shops. The large drop is attributed to the slashing of civil servants’ salaries in particular. In total this year, retail turnover is expected to drop to 13.2 billion euros, from a total of 16.4 billion in 2009.
