Index halts decline after shaky start

Bottler Coca-Cola HBC (CCHBC) outperformed on the Athens bourse yesterday ahead of its Wall Street listing later in the day as the broader market edged 0.51 percent higher. CCHBC, which listed its American Depositary Shares on the New York Stock Exchange, rose 2.30 percent to 15.14 euros. The Athens benchmark general index ended at 1,735.87 points after getting off to a shaky start. Blue chips on the bourse’s FTSE/ASE index advanced 0.42 percent to 860.53 points. Mid-caps gained 1.23 percent and small-caps added 0.97 percent. «Investors were selectively buying stocks with low valuations and preferably with a defensive nature, such as that of the Athens Water Company,» said a broker. Bourse newcomer IT firm Lantec gained 24.0 percent to 6.82 euros. Turnover was 80.12 million euros on 24.5 million shares traded. Losers beat winners 232 to 74 while 54 shares were unchanged on 360 traded. (Reuters)
