Athens protest by schoolchildren marred by violence

A hooded youth throws a petrol bomb at riot police standing guard next to the Parliament in Athens as schoolchildren protested against education reforms Monday. Meanwhile, riot police were also sent to contain a violent rampage by self-styled anarchists outside the Athens Polytechnic building in the neighborhood of Exarchia. Traffic on Patission Street was brought to a halt for over an hour. Main opposition New Democracy attacked the leftist-led government in a statement, saying the riots exposed its "tolerant attitude to violence and lawlessness." [Alkis Konstantinidis/Reuters]
