Fire-scarred historic building set for renovation

A man walks past the fire-scarred building that used to host the historic Attikon and Apollon cinemas on Stadiou Street, downtown Athens, on Saturday. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation recently announced plans to subsidize the restoration of the building that was damaged by firebombs thrown by protesters during a violent riot in 2012. The interiors of the two theaters survived mostly unscathed. The eclecticist building that houses the cinemas was constructed between 1870 and 1881 to a design by German architect Ernst Ziller.
