Immigrants arrested on yacht off Attica

Yet another boatload of illegal immigrants was intercepted off Lavrion on the southern coast of Attica early yesterday morning, bringing the total number of illegal immigrants intercepted this year to 4,431, along with 94 traffickers. The 40 Iraqi Kurds were aboard the 10-meter yacht Lale 8, skippered by French national Eric Bernard, 38, and crewed by two Turks, Cuneyt Kurt, 27, and Ozer Gapin, 33. In Cyprus, the coast guard went on alert following reports that two cargo ships full of Afghan and Iraqi immigrants have left ports in the northern Turkish-occupied zone and on the Turkish coast. Also yesterday, the Turkish coast guard detained about 400 illegal immigrants in a boat apparently on its way to the Greek islands.
