Of all departments, that of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the NTUA came first in order of candidate preference (2,464) out of all university and TEI departments. But TEI information technology departments made an impressively strong showing, with candidates displaying a preference for TEI that offered a subject in the same field and thus better job opportunities. The situation is not likely to change, given that the Ministry of Education has announced it will increase places in IT departments in all higher education institutes in order to cover the deficit in IT executives, estimated at some 50,000. By contrast, there has been a loss of interest in traditional departments, such as the NTUA’s civil engineering faculty, which was marked as first choice by 1,033 candidates this year as opposed to 1,273 in 2001.
