Winter is finally on the way

The weather bureau issued storm warnings yesterday as it forecast heavy rain, snowfall, and gale-force winds in the Aegean, expected to last well into tomorrow. «Stormy weather that arrived (Thursday) night in the north will spread out over the whole country, mainly in the form of heavy rain and gale-force southerly winds at sea,» meteorologist Chrysoula Petrou told Kathimerini yesterday. The Civil Defense General Secretariat has sent warnings to the areas expected to be hardest hit. In Athens, the water and sewage company (EYDAP) is on the alert, as are authorities and construction company crews in districts bordering the Kifissos River, where there has been frequent flooding during heavy rain recently. Temperatures will plummet further on Monday, particularly in central and southern districts. Winds in the Aegean are expected to reach 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale. A slight improvement in the weather is expected on Tuesday, although low temperatures will last until the end of the week.
