Metro to get new line
Light appears at the end of a 1,120-meter long metro tunnel linking the Syntagma Square station with Monastiraki, where a new, 22-billion-drachma underground station is being built under the old electric railway platform. The last few meters of tunnel were dug yesterday in the presence of government and metro officials. The extension of Line 3 from Ethniki Amyna will start functioning at the end of next year. Tunneling cost 18 billion drachmas and was made particularly difficult by ancient wells and rickety churches at ground level.
