Traffic woes ahead on Pireos and Kaningos

Major roadworks start today and tomorrow on two vital Athens thoroughfares, and are expected to add considerably to the capital’s traffic woes. Due to excavations for a new underground car park beneath Kaningos Square, the section of Academias Street between George and Kaningos streets will be blocked off from 5 a.m. tomorrow until October. Traffic coming up Halkokondyli Street will be diverted right into narrow Kaningos and then left up the southern end of the square, while George Street will come to an end at Patoussa Street. And work to build two new bridges over the Kifissos River will result in parts of Pireos Street (between the Moschato bridge and the Elais intersection) and Kifissou Avenue (between Aghiou Ioannou Rendi and Pireos) being blocked off for four days starting at 7 a.m. today. Traffic will mostly be re-routed through Moschato and Neo Faliron.
