MERCY: The chasm noted between the government and the American mission over the price of oil widened somewhat yesterday. Another message was sent yesterday evening from the head of the American mission to Prime Minister Sophocles Venizelos in response to his letter of yesterday. The only details of the message made known were that the Americans are insisting on the price of 10,500 drachmas per oka (1.2 kilos), compared to the government’s 11,000 drachmas, along with an explanation of their reasons. They clearly state the view that the texts exchanged should be published (…). Neither the government nor the American mission are about to make any concessions, with the Americans expressing themselves more strongly. PRISONERS: The Justice Ministry has ordered that three inmates of Averof prison in Athens – The communists M. Tsiboukidis, N. Depetzis and S. Kritsikis – be transferred to the prison on the island of Cephalonia(…). They were taken yesterday afternoon to the transfer department. During the move, the prisoners tried to create a disturbance, protesting loudly. In order to maintain the current momentum, the USA will have to match the apparently effective military campaign of the last 11 days with substantial progress on the political level and, in particular, on shaping Afghanistan’s political landscape for the day after…
