Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov…
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov (r) visited the Russian Orthodox Church in Athens yesterday. He met with PM Costas Simitis and Foreign Minister George Papandreou. Iraq was high on the agenda. ‘We believe there are no serious reasons for us to talk about a military campaign against Iraq. We believe there are opportunities at the political and diplomatic levels that will allow the issue to be dealt with. That is Russia’s position,’ Ivanov said after talks with Papandreou. Papandreou spoke with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Yakis, in an effort to find a solution. He voiced support for Turkey’s regional conference on Iraq.
