NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY: According to reliable sources, US Ambassador John Purifoy, who received a letter the other day from Prime Minister Sophocles Venizelos asking for his mediation in the dispute between the government and the US mission over the price of oil, has told Venizelos that he rejects both the role and the government’s views on the issue. Mr. Purifoy, bound by a previous agreement on the matter with the head of the American mission in Greece, told the government that he is completely in accord with the views of the mission. The mission chief’s statement on the reasons for the dispute with the government, and accusation that the government was unwilling to guarantee the distribution program, led to a further deterioration in the already tense relations between the mission and the government (…), made worse by the fact that the statement was made directly to the Greek people, instead of to the government. GUERRILLA ETEOKLIS: Kalamata, 18 – Last Tuesday evening (October 16), the bandit chief Eteoklis Domoulakis appeared at the Profitis Ilias sanatorium which is 20 minutes from the town of Kalamata and stole food at gunpoint, issuing insults against the Americans and the State. The US should no doubt avoid giving the impression that they are transforming their Middle Eastern policy under the pressure of a terrorist act. This would render them the target of devastating attacks by every group that wants to promote its legitimate or illegitimate interests. On the other hand, however, one cannot possibly ignore the fact that the extremism of the Arab world is mainly a product of the Palestinian dispute and the realization of this reality is vital for the consolidation of stability in the region…
