Police unit retraining

The retraining of some 2,000 uniformed police officers in the DIAS motorcycle unit will start on Monday in the context of the initiatives announced in the aftermath of the deadly car chase and shootout last month in the western Attica suburb of Perama that left a 20-year-old Roma man, Nikos Sampanis, dead and another injured.

It is envisaged that the program will be attended on a weekly basis by 100 officers and that the process will be completed in around 20 weeks.

Citizens’ Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos had pledged soon after the Perama incident to introduce measures to improve the effectiveness of response teams, “with priority given to police officers serving in DIAS.”
