Vigilance urged to avoid possibility of floods
In view of the wave of wet weather which was forecast to sweep into the country on Friday night, Alternate Interior Minister Stelios Petsas urged local authorities to expedite the clearing of roads of snow, fallen trees and branches and the clearing of drains to avoid flood problems.
“Any shortcomings observed in the management of the unprecedented Elpida weather front must not be repeated,” the alternate minister said in his letter to local authorities, calling on them to implement civil protection plans.
However, many municipalities seemed to be waiting for the rainfall to clear the snow from roads and sidewalks. To the chagrin of locals, municipalities such as Halandri, Agia Paraskevi, Holargos, Melissia and Penteli continued to face problems on Friday after the snowstorm earlier in the week.
The main roads were open but there was still snow in many places, which turned into ice, hampering the movement of pedestrians.
