Woman arrested in Drama for trying to sell Byzantine icon

A 57-year-old woman was arrested near the town of Drama in northern Greece when she tried to sell an illegally acquired Byzantine icon through an online ad.

The icon was being offered at a price of 1,200 euros. Officers of the Department of Protection of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities in Thessaloniki appeared as potential buyers at a pre-arranged appointment, arrested the woman and seized the icon.

Archaeologists at the Ephorate of Antiquities of Drama said the artefact is a triptych used for domestic worship that dates back to the 18th century and falls under the legislation for the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage.

The suspect will appear before a prosecutor in Drama on Wednesday.
