Vandals smash plaque commemorating 2010 riot victims

Unknown vandals have smashed a marble plaque on downtown Athens’ Stadiou Street that commemorates the victims of a deadly firebomb attack during an anti-austerity protest that turned into a violent riot in May 2010.

The plaque was erected in front of where the bank that was attacked with Molotov cocktails once stood. Three bank employees died in the attack.

One corner of the plaque was found smashed by passersby on Wednesday morning.

Minister of State Akis Skertsos condemned the vandalism in a post on social media and said the plaque would be replaced immediately – and “every day if necessary.”
