Self-imposed fast kills young medical student

A 20-year-old medical student, who had been suffering from anorexia nervosa for years, died of cardiac arrest brought on by her self-imposed starvation, Ioannina coroner Theodoros Vouyiouklakis said yesterday. The young woman, who was not named, was traveling with her mother by bus from the western town of Ioannina, where she was in medical school, to her home in Larissa for a few days’ rest. She suddenly felt ill on the Katara pass near the village of Metsovo and collapsed. Her mother and other passengers tried in vain to revive her. She was taken by ambulance to the Metsovo Health Center where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The woman had been suffering from anorexia nervosa before going to university in Ioannina, where her situation deteriorated. At the time of her death she weighed under 25 kilograms (55 pounds).
