Bogus doctor convicted of seven counts of murder, slapped with 50-year sentence

A man who posed as a cancer specialist and convinced terminal patients to take his quack herbal remedies has been convicted of seven counts of murder and six attempted murders. He was also found guilty of peddling unlicensed drugs to minors, of fraud and multiple other crimes.

All together, Nikos Kontostathis, 50, was sentenced to 50 years in prison – the biggest sentence on record in Greece, according to reports – and fined 327,000 euros.

However, he was also acquitted of five counts of murder and eight attempted murders, while the other 16 defendants who were on trial with him were given a verdict of not guilty.

“What really shocked the bench was that his actions were against vulnerable people, people who were suffering,” the prosecutor in the case was quoted by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency as saying.
