Renewable energy source production exceeded 10GW in early 2023

Production capacity of renewable energy sources in Greece broke the 10GW barrier in early 2023, Manos Manousakis, chairman and CEO of the Independent Power Transmission Operator IPTO said on Wednesday.

Addressing the 4th Power & Gas Forum in Athens, Manousakis said that new renewable energy sources units added in the system last year totaled 1.3GW (583MW in the transmission system and 1.3GW in the distribution grid), while two operators (IPTO and HEDNO SA -Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator SA), have issued offers for connection with the grid for units with a total power of 13.5GW.

Manousakis said that in 2022 the participation of renewable energy sources to the country’s energy mix grew by 6 percentage points (39% from 33% in 2021) and underlined that investments implemented by IPTO will raise the available room for new units to 28GW in 2030 from 17GW currently. He stressed it was necessary to accelerate licensing procedures for projects such as energy storage. [AMNA]
