Vermio proved unpredictable for the designers and builders. Problems arose in one of the 15 twin-bore tunnels – which has a 261-meter left bore and a 203-meter right bore – due to soil subsidence from the pressure. Such problems are common, but this particular tunnel proved a headache for the Egnatia Odos company and the geotechnicians, because it occurred at a point where no detour was possible. Specialists from the National Technical University and the internationally renowned Canadian tunnel expert E. Hook were brought in. Eventually it was decided to stabilize the tunnel, and measures costing nearly 6 million euros are currently being implemented. The measures, which will not delay the overall project, involve special techniques which are being applied for the first time in Greece.
