Prosecutors take their case abroad

Incensed at repeated government attacks on their colleagues, the union of Greek judges and prosecutors wrote yesterday to international and EU unions to castigate an impermissible interference in the work of independent justice. In an extraordinary meeting yesterday, the union adopted a resolution condemning the recent incidents of politicians attributing through the media, thoughtlessly and without supporting evidence, political motives to the actions of prosecutors. Such insulting actions will not bow prosecutors, the resolution, which was sent to judges and prosecutors’ unions abroad, read. This followed the highly-publicized attack last month by Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister Costas Laliotis against prosecutor Giorgos Gerakis, who tabled fraud and corruption charges against officials involved in one of Laliotis’s major projects, the compilation of a National Land Register. The minister, seconded by government spokesman Dimitris Reppas and with the support of PM Costas Simitis, accused Gerakis of following orders from opposition New Democracy, Paralympics
