Drive to recycle cars, batteries, mineral oil

Manufacturers and importers of cars, batteries and mineral oil will have to help recycle their worn-out or spent products under three presidential decrees signed yesterday by Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister Vasso Papandreou. The ministry hopes recycling programs for environmentally hazardous waste – Greece already faces prosecution at the European Court for failing to adopt management programs for used mineral oil – will manage to reclaim 20-85 percent of such products in three years’ time. Consumers will be encouraged to return used batteries to supermarkets and other outlets that will sport collection bins, while it will become obligatory to take all used mineral oil to recycling plants. Similar decrees will be signed on the disposal of car tires, electric and electronic appliances and building rubble.
