Essence of the dispute

Site: 1.1 hectares near Lycabettus Hill behind the NIMTS Hospital and next door to the Navy Hospital, owned by the Church of Greece. Problem: The Church wants to build a 750-bed hotel, although this is not permitted by the zoning regulations and despite the fact it would mean the demolition of 19th century buildings. Opposition: Architects are calling for the preservation of the site as a whole, including the large number of old trees. Developments: A decision is expected by Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos regarding approval by a ministry council.
