Trial for slain journalist Karaivaz postponed to July 5
The trial for the assassination of investigative journalist Giorgos Karaivaz, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed until July 5 at the request of a lawyer representing Karaivaz’s family.
The lawyer sought additional time to review the case and present crucial evidence. The court agreed to the delay after jury selection, despite opposition from the public prosecutor and defense lawyers who suggested a brief recess instead.
Karaivaz, 52, was fatally shot outside his Athens home on April 9, 2021. The suspects, brothers, were arrested in May last year, with one allegedly linked to a protection racket tied to the Greek Mafia. Authorities believe the brothers carried out a contract killing when they gunned down the journalist in the southern Athens suburb of Alimos.
Karaivaz, known for his investigative reporting on organized crime and corruption, had connections within the Greek underworld and with corrupt police figures. He was a key witness in a National Intelligence Service probe into police misconduct and criminal activity.
The trial of the two brothers, facing charges of premeditated murder, involves a complex investigation into organized crime connections. Both defendants deny involvement in Karaivaz’s murder.
